Art Academy - Abstract Sculpture (Lower Key Stage 2)

Abstract Sculpture is an Art and Design unit of work aimed primarily at children aged 7-9. The unit consolidates and deepens children’s understanding of sculpture and in particular, assemblage sculpture. Learning is delivered through an in-depth look at abstract art and some iconic artists and artwork that feature in this art movement. The package provides the medium-term plan, six lessons (each lesson has a MS Powerpoint presentation) and a knowledge organiser. An additional presentation focuses on What is Sculpture? Strands of Learning: Sculpture Painting Children learn about some of the key artists and art works associated with abstract art. They study the work of Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro and interpret their work through authentic assemblage sculpture. The unit completes with them creating their own abstract sculpture designed to highlight the problem of plastic waste. This is used to deepen children’s understanding of how contemporary artists use their artwork to express their feelings and thought and to convey important messages, This unit of work is part of the Art Academy Scheme of Work for children aged 5-11 being developed on behalf of Carousel Education.

Blooming Lovely is an Art and Design unit of work aimed primarily at children aged 9-11. The unit deepens children’s understanding of drawing, painting and collage. Strands of Learning: Drawing Painting Collage Children use the central theme of flowers to undertake a range of activities to extend and consolidate knowledge and skills in drawing, painting and collage. They create flower paintings using both paint and pastel media and use these to deepen their understanding of colour theory. They make simple 3D flowers that are used to create collage. Towards the end of the unit they study the flower paintings of Georgia O’Keefe and are introduced to the work of Tom Yendell a prominent mouth and foot painter. Clarice Cliff is an Art and Design unit of work aimed primarily at children aged 7-9. The unit focuses on the work of the ceramic designer Clarice Cliff. Strands of Learning: Drawing Painting Sculpture Children draw fruit and then turn them into stylised drawings that are incorporated into designs for plates and bowls. Children create landscape designs in the style of Clarice Cliff. Skills are developed in sculpture through creating paper mache bowls and ceramic pots using the slab method. As an additional activity, children are given the opportunity to create wooden clock faces. Dragons! is an Art and Design unit of work aimed primarily at children aged 7-9. The unit is an opportunity for children to undertake a range of creative and artistic activities within a common theme – Dragons. Strands of Learning: • Drawing • Painting • Sculpture Within a common theme of dragons, children learn and consolidate knowledge of a range of different techniques. They learn about how to blend colours when using colouring pencils and soft chalk pastels when creating dragon eyes compositions. They use this knowledge when decorating their ceramic dragon eyes and clay models of dragons. As part of the drawing element within this unit they learn how to enlarge drawings using a simple grid method. Under the Sea is an Art and Design unit of work aimed primarily at children aged 5-7. The unit introduces children to some key elements of the art and design curriculum including weaving, sculpture and creating diorama. They learn about line, shape and colour whilst creating patterned finish using wax resist and other painting techniques. They use cut vegetables to create printed patterns on fish outlines as an introduction to printmaking. They are introduced to simple paper weaving using a fish template. They have the opportunity to create fish sculptures through modelling with a malleable material and also through assemblage techniques. Finally they bring their learning together from the unit to create ‘through the porthole’ diorama. This is achieved through creative activities that are linked through the common theme of castles. Strands of Learning: Drawing Painting Collage Printmaking Children learn about monoprinting and frottage work to create patterned papers. They learn about mosaics and use coloured shapes to create mosaic pictures and to mimic the work of the artist Paul Klee. They also learn about coats of arms and use collage techniques to create their own coat of arms. In their final composition they bring together their previous learning and collage together patterned papers and drawings to create a landscape collage of a castle. William Morris is an Art and Design unit of work aimed primarily at children aged 9-11. Strands of Learning: Drawing Painting Sculpture Printmaking Children study and create illuminated letter designs that are then realised as a clay bas relief sculpture. They then study the wallpaper designs of William Morris to understand motifs as the central part of patterned designs. They design their own motifs and use them in a variety of relief printmaking activities. Madly Monet is an Art and Design unit of work aimed primarily at children aged 5-7. The unit introduces children to impressionist painting through studying the work of the famous impressionist painter Claude Monet. The package provides the medium-term plan, six lessons (each lesson has a MS Powerpoint presentation) and a knowledge organiser. There is an additional presentation on the life and work of the artist. As part of their learning, children can complete a study of the artist (PDF template provided) Strands of Learning: • Painting • Printmaking • Collage Children learn about the life and impressionist paintings of the artist Claude Monet. There is a particular focus on his paintings from his garden at Giverny. Children begin by learning the technique of marbling using both water and shaving foam. These techniques are a simple form of monoprinting. In creating a simple composition of the Japanese bridge at Giverny, children consolidate their understanding of colour theory, in particular warm and cold colours. Children have the opportunity to sketch real trees from observation, and them use these drawings to help them to paint trees in the impressionist style of painting. Children use wax resist painting technique to recreate the Garden at Giverny painting by Monet. Finally, they bring their learning from the unit together to create a three-dimensional garden scene inspired by the paintings of Claude Monet. Strands of Learning: Sculpture Textiles Yinka Shonibare is a British-Nigerian concept artist who explore the themes of cultural identity and the colonial past of Britain and other European countries in the nineteenth pattern. His distinctive style often includes using Ankara cloth designs produced through the traditional batik method of textile design. This unit of work focuses on his art installation, ‘The British Library’ at Tate Modern (London) which explores immigration into the United Kingdom. The unit finishes with the creation of wind sculptures using malleable materials formed using an armature. Strands of Learning: • Drawing • Painting • Sculpture Children undertake a range of drawing and painting activities to develop their understanding of portraiture. They learn the difference between portraits and self-portraits. They study the different facial features and how they are drawn from different viewpoints. Using the idea of different viewpoints allows them to develop their knowledge of the cubist style of Pablo Picasso. They study the portraits of Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Amedo Modigliani. Zentangles is an Art and Design unit of work aimed primarily at children aged 7-9. Its main theme is creating patterns using line, shape, and colour. Children create Zentangle patterns, a Zentangle sculpture and a Zentangle monoprint. A Zentangle is a meditative form of doodling that has patterns that interweave and ‘tangle’ together. It can be used as a form of mindfulness for children. As well as promoting calmness and relaxation, Zentangles are a way of developing children’s fine motor skills and effective use of art mediums such as drawing pens, felt tips, colouring pencils, and paint. Zentangles are a form of abstract art. Abstract art is about shapes and colours and the feelings it expresses, not about the accurate portrayal of a subject. They use these techniques to create pop-art inspired prints. As part of the unit of work they learn about the iconic work of the artist Romero Britto and through this are introduced to the genre of still life painting. In studying the art of Andy Warhol and Keith Haring they create multiple printed images in the style of pop art.
